Did you know that you are existing right in this very moment? Like, are you fully aware of your surroundings?
No, seriously. Think about it. You exist right now.
Look around you. What do you see? For instance, maybe you’re on your break at work right now. Have you ever noticed how the clock sits a little crooked on the wall?
Maybe you’re in the middle of your favorite coffee shop. What do you hear? You may have noticed the way the espresso machine steaming the milk or the classical music playing.
Or maybe you’re walking between classes. Have you ever noticed how the grass is a shade lighter on the side where the sun bleaches it?
Odds are, you may have never felt fully present in these moments.
I know for me, being fully present is a challenge. But when I have these moments, I always learn something new about myself and the world around me. The other day, Cody and I were at Wal-Mart grocery shopping and I realized that I was existing in that very moment. I was in Wal-Mart, going about my business, picking up a few things for dinner. Cody and I were having a real, live conversation. There were other people existing too. People were filling their prescriptions, buying decorations for their holiday parties, and there were people buying last minute birthday cards. They were existing and I was existing and were all together at Wal-Mart, brought on by different moments and quick decisions. Sounds silly, I’m sure. But I felt “alive” in those moments.
Suddenly realizing that you are aware can be a weird experience, though. As a result, it makes you realize all the times that you weren’t truly present. How many times in our lives do we just simply not realize the world around us? Seems like we can get so caught up in all of the hustle and bustle that life seems to pass right by us. Think about it. Have you ever driven to your destination, not even realizing you were driving or how you got there? Because this happens to me quite often. When I zone out, I tend to lose track of time. There is no telling how many things I miss because I’m either contemplating something in the past or trying to figure out for the future.
However, there is something beautiful about just being present and in the moment. Truly experiencing the circumstances around you and being mindful of how you feel about those experiences is a unique experience. I feel like this is a unique experience that I feel like we all desperately need in our lives.
So as you go about your day today, remember to stay present in the moment.
