Understanding the Enneagram and how it works allows you to understand who God is and how he loves us.
I get it. You may be skeptical about learning about yet another personality typing system. We were too. But honestly, after researching and understanding the Enneagram, we will never look back. By understanding the complexity of the Enneagram, we have a deeper connection to those around us.
All throughout May, Cody and I are talking about the Enneagram. We talk about how it relates to each one of us personally. And we also talk about how we can strengthen our relationships by relating to those around us. This week, we are giving an overview of what the Enneagram is and how we can use it to our advantage. You can find the episode here.
Why The Enneagram?
No two people are the same and we want to highlight each different personality. But first, we have to explain the basic principle of the Enneagram before we are able to completely dive into each personality. The reason why we believe in the Enneagram is because not only does it allow you to understand who you are as an individual but also to begin to understand the people around you. Here at The Reckless Pursuit, our number one focus is love. Love God, love others, and all else will follow. (Matt. 22:37-38) However, we truly believe that only when you are able to understand the people around you then you are fully capable of loving people where they are at.
First glance, the Enneagram looks confusing. Like, what even is this 9 sided open shape? What do these numbers even mean and why are they pointing back to each other? It may even be daunting to think that there are only 9 personality types. I for sure was skeptical about this because out of all of the people in the world, how are there only 9 types? Also, why should we label people when it just puts people in weird boxes?
I totally agree. However, out of all of the different personality typing systems in the world, the Enneagram’s sole purpose is to make you realize that no one is capable of being boxed in. We are all unique and until the Enneagram, I never found a personality system that so intricately unveiled God’s design for people. So many other personality systems tell you what you already know but they all have one thing in common. They also give you the excuse of not ever changing because of the “that’s just the way I am” mentality. But the Enneagram no longer gives you the excuse to stay where you are.
Recommendation
Over the next few weeks, we will be discussing how the Enneagram has shaped our lives as well as hearing from others. One of the best ways to follow along with each personality type is to read The Road Back to You by Ian Cron. This book has monumental in our discovery and we will be referencing this book when describing each personality. Honestly, this book is what grasped our attention after being recommended by so many. It is an easy read but beware, it may just rock your world. 😉
