COVID-19 has taught us that above all else, humanity lies within community.
These may be unknown times that we are currently living in. There is a lot of tragedy and loss and heartbreak. You may be feeling depressed, anxious, or tense during this season. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t beauty in the chaos. Even through adversity, there is still one thing that remains: humanity. And do you know where humanity resides? Through community. We may be facing a terrible, global pandemic. But, we still have each other. And that counts for something.
So, here is what COVID-19 has taught us about community.
If you look through history’s worst seasons and tragic events, you will always find people rallying together in unity.
When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping”.
Fred Rogers
The above quote from Mr. Rogers shows that time after time, we have seen people rise up from adversity to lend out a helping hand. There are always a few, select people who put their lives on the line just to help others stay safe. We have seen this through the work of doctors, police officers, firefighters standing on the frontlines for people’s health and safety. We have also seen the philanthropists, churches, and non-profit organizations working on the sidelines or behind-the-scenes collecting donations and offering their services to food pantries, etc. Even comedians, entertainers, and artists alike come together to bring peace and kindness, and even bits of laughter through tough times.
There will always be helpers.
Why?
Because without the helpers, we have no community.
And if we have no community, we have no humanity.
And the biggest thing that COVID-19 has taught us about community is that there is always an opportunity to rebuild.
Don’t let this time that you have been given be wasted on bickering and unnecessary banter. If we’re going to get through this thing, we’re gonna have to stick together.
What stones can you lie down in the midst of chaos to help your fellow man? While you are pondering and searching for answers, we are asking ourselves this same question.
